An online friend of mine in another country has been on an extended (year long) holiday traveling around the country in his camper with his two dogs. He’s worked at his job for 37 years.
Today he told me two things: One, a good friend of his died today from cancer. Two, He turned in his notice to his job that he isn’t going back. Spending the rest of his years traveling. In his words: “Life’s too precious”.
Now I’m not saying that I’m about to do the same thing, but it does make one think about what’s important. We work our jobs to be able to support ourselves and enjoy life, but does our careers get in the way of our enjoyment?
I don’t have the answer to this, not for me, and certainly not for you. This is something we each need to work on for ourselves. Me, I am going to start working on it today. I’m getting close to retirement age, and while my wife is a few years behind me, I need to figure out if I want to retire when I can, or work a little longer. Working longer gets me more money, but also gets me a shorter time to spend it. Plus I love my job, although there are times when I look forward to retiring. Then again, if I was to retire in a few years, I don’t want to wind up sitting around the house alone until my wife is able to retire also. Maybe volunteer somewhere.
It’s something to think about, and I had better get to thinking.
